Gulik, R.H. van.
Erotic Colour Prints of the Ming Period with an Essay on Chinese Sex Life from the Han to the Ch’ing Dynasty, B.C. 206-A.D. 1644.
Tokyo, 1951 [= no place, no publisher, ca.1970], facsimile (pirated) edition, 3 vols., (6),XXVI,(14),242,(1); (224); (54)p., 6 coloured and 6 tinted plates, 24 full-page b/w ills., English and Chinese facs. manuscript text, vignettes by R.H. van Gulik, bound as a blockbook, orig. uniform red card wrappers, each w. facs. mounted calligraphed title label, quarto (30 x 22 cm.). = Rare reprint of the original edition, which was privately issued by the author in 50 copies only in 1951 in Tokyo. This edition follows the 1951 original most closely and is exactly executed after that edition. This reprint is much more uncommon than the one-volume 1989 reprint. The first volume is a detailed study of Chinese sexual life until the beginning of the Manchu period (1644) with a special reference to Chinese erotic art, illustrated with genuine blockprints, made by a Japanese engraver as exact copies of the Ming originals. The second volume contains the original Chinese texts in facsimile handwriting. The third volume is a reprint of a 24-page Ming erotic album, struck from the original blocks [here facsimile] from the author’s collection. Still the most authorative and extensive study on the subject
